Harris Park South Fork Trail

Background
The trail is located on the north side of the river, beginning at the bridge at the west edge of the park and ending near the bridge at the BLM trailhead. It is approximately one mile long. For most of its length it follows the contour several hundred feet above the river. At the east end the trail descends to the river and then winds mostly through the flood plain before reaching the road at the trailhead.

The trail affords the hiker views of the valley river and basalt formations, passes through several vegetative types and accesses the river beneath a basalt cliff.

Originally part of the trail system accessing the South Fork of the Walla Walla River, this segment was abandoned a number of years ago when the current road was built. The county acquired the trail upon assuming ownership of the land on the north side of the park.

Users need to be in reasonable physical condition to hike a few steep pitches and irregular surfaces along its length. And they need to be alert for rattlesnakes and other wildlife to be expected in this setting.

Harris County Park is 19 miles south east Milton-Freewater and may be reached by using the river road. The park is administered by Umatilla County.
