March 6th, 2007 BESST KIDS 9:15-10:00
Two students finished nailing the pieces
together of the plant press started last fall. The other five students filled in
the two holes resulting from removing the trees last year infested with codling
moth. Hopefully replacement trees will be found by Arbor Week. Math Lab 10:15-11:15
Four students. Started the class introducing
them to additional measuring instruments, a fiberglass cloth tape and a metal
tape. Compared the characteristics (precision, accuracy, and possible errors)
with the wooden and plastic rulers. Students used a 300 ft. tape to lay out a
100 ft. course for calibrating their pace. Calibrating required keeping track of
the number of paces over the 100 ft. then determining the average length of a
pace using division.. All calculations were done on paper. On a course of an
unknown distance they tried out their new knowledge and skill. One student was
on the mark, another 2 ft. over and another within 6 feet. After several years
of doing this exercise, this is the first group that grasped the concepts
quickly and was so accurate on their first attempt. Probably should quit while
we are so good. Mr. Lewis’s Stream Keepers 12:00- 12:45 & Mrs. Harwood’s Stream Keepers 12:45-1:30
Both groups of four students each tackled the
job of moving the large debris piled on the garden area to a new area at the
north end. What I expected to be a multiple week exercise was 90% completed. As
usual, the girls contributed more than their share of hard labor. The wildlife
excitement today were numerous mice or shrews found under the debris pile.
Gave a class room presentation on the “Trees
by the Riverside” poster contest. Divided time between contributions trees make
to a stream habitat and water quality and hints in making an effective poster.
After School Science Club 3:00-4:15 Counted 17 students including our two seventh grade assistants. The girls stayed in with Ms. Hendricks to work on their cabin project. Boys were divided into work groups. One to repair the stream flow box damaged by vandals in the last two weeks. Another group finished up the debris moving. And a third group worked on removing blackberries along the pond. One of the younger boys proudly showed me his badge of honor-the mud from shoulder to feet resulting from a fall in the creek. Luther Burbank would be pleased. |
