When the White House Conference on
Cooperative Conservation convenes
in St. Louis, Missouri on August 29, 30, 31, the Walla Walla restoration effort
will be one of 32 case studies highlighted in this historic gathering devoted to
building partnerships in the name of cooperative conservation. As directed in
the President’s August 2004 order to the White House Council on Environmental
Quality, this will be only the fourth time in history that a conference like
this has been convened (President’s T. Roosevelt, Kennedy and Johnson each held
similar national forums). This conference invitation is both a tremendous honor and opportunity to build upon successful partnerships in the Walla Walla basin. A working group of local restoration and planning participants are developing the presentation and conference materials. The Walla Walla effort will be highlighted in a 90-minute session at the conference, with a team of local Washington and Oregon participants presenting and answering questions on “Water Without War: Cooperative Salmon Restoration.” This presentation will highlight how our comprehensive cooperative conservation projects have involved local, state, Federal, environmental, agricultural and Tribal entities working together for the recovery and protection of salmon, steelhead and bull trout populations and the quality of their habitat in the Walla Walla Basin while also preserving local agricultural economies and tribal customs. Other conference events include a poster session and a series of smaller group meetings with a focus on elements of successful cooperative conservation partnerships. The working group offered a preview of the presentation at the Walla Walla Basin Watershed Council monthly meeting on August 15, 2005 (agenda available here). It is expected that the presentation will eventually be available on a CD. A handout has been prepared to pass out at
the conference that may be downloaded: |
